Biography
Gen was a British nu-metal/hardcore band based in Brierley Hill, West Midlands, active in the early 2000s. Emerging from the Midlands' vibrant metal community, Gen combined aggressive guitar riffs, dynamic drumming, and a blend of screamed and rapped vocals. Their music addressed themes like genetic engineering and personal faith, setting them apart from their contemporaries.
In 2003, Gen released their debut album, Rite of Refusal, through Meltdown Records. Recorded at T. Bush Record Plant in Syracuse, Indiana, and mixed by Tim Bushong, the album showcased their unique sound. Tracks like "Exile," "Helix Doll," and "Unity" highlighted their musical prowess and thematic depth. "Helix Doll" delved into the complexities of genetic manipulation, while "Unity" expressed their spiritual convictions. The album received critical acclaim, with Cross Rhythms praising it as "a must-have album" and potentially "the best UK hard music album of 2003."
