So you're here, you want to add information about your favorite band(s), but you're not sure how or what to do. Here's how we've been handling the main parts of this site, 'tis always subject to change:

Archive > Index

This is the index that is based off an early/mid 2023 snapshot of the group's archive. Since the idea is to keep things synced up with Flippinwaffles' and my (mthntc) copies of the archive, editing is restricted to the two of us. Updates to the index happen every few weeks according to what's listed on Archive>Recent Changes.

Archive > Individual release pages

You've got a rip of an album that does not have its own page on the site yet. We'd usually advice against creating a page for it according to the specifications of your files because, just like the index, these pages are based on what is available on our collective archive.

  • One option would be to send us the files you've got, if they're a brand new addition or an upgrade of what we already have, and then create the release page listing it & any other versions that exist and we may or may not have.
  • Another option is to download something off the archive, create the page based on those files, and notify us so we can make sure everything's correct & approve the page.

To create a release page, edit the url of the site to point to the non-existent page in a "Artist Name - Release Title" format, like this:

https://nu-metal-preservation.com/index.php/Cool Band - Awesome Release

The blank spaces will automatically be replaced with underscores, so don't worry about those. Click the "create" tab at the top, make sure it's "create" and not "create source". Click "Insert">"Template", write "Version" on the search bar and click on the one result available (template name searches are case sensitive, look out for that!). There you can fill all the fields according to the specifications of the release, the files & guidelines given by the comments on each field. Once you're done, click "Insert" on the top right.

Last thing is to add categories, if any of the existing ones apply to any of the versions of the release you added (Not Accurate, No Logs, No Scans, Bad [Misc. Issues]); go to the top right and click the icon with three horizontal lines, then "Categories", and add all the fitting categories.

Once you're done, "Apply changes", and "Save page...". If there's anything we should know, write it down in the submission notes or let us know on Discord. If there's any "fun fax" worthy of Trivia section below all the versions, you're welcome to add them. Information such as producers, places things were recorded or mastered and the like -anything that is better suited for Discogs- should not go here.

  • Cover images should be taken from the exact version of the release you're adding. Maximum resolution should be 1000x1000. The file name should be "Artwork-BandName-ReleaseTitle(DistinctionNotes*).png/jpg".
    • *Distinction notes include cat. #, things like "promo" or "single", or release year if the band had multiple releases with the same title.
  • The "Download" field works like this; you can upload .log, .cue, .accurip, and of course image files to the site, and once each one is done, right click the link and copy it. It should look like this:

https://nu-metal-preservation.com/images/a/a4/Example_Band_-_Example_Album.log

In the "Download" field, open brackets , paste the link, leave a blank space, write "Log" (or "Cue"/"AccuRip" without quotation marks), close brackets, and add a line break tag (<br>). A Download field with links to all three of those files should look something like this:

[https://nu-metal-preservation.com/images/a/a4/Example_Band_-_Example_Album.log Log] <br> [https://nu-metal-preservation.com/images/a/a4/Example_Band_-_Example_Album.cue Cue] <br> [https://nu-metal-preservation.com/images/a/a4/Example_Band_-_Example_Album.accurip AccuRip]

The file names for all of these should follow the same scheme: "Band Name - Release Title (Distinction Notes).log/cue/accurip"

Archive > Band pages

These work largely the same way as the individual release pages.

Edit the url to go to a currently nonexistent band page, click "create", search for the "BandInfo" template , and add info accordingly. For the rest of the content in band pages, we've worked with 4 main headers: "Biography", "Members", "Discography", and "Links". If there are any other fitting header such as "Videography" for bands with music videos and DVDs, they should be added and placed wherever you deem logical (i.e. Videography under Discography, not under Links).

The formatting for each section is not quite refined yet; the way we handle it normally is as follows:

  • Biography: direct citations from other sites in between quotation marks and in a Block Quote paragraph.
  • Members: vocals > guitars > bass > drums > keyboards/DJ/sampler > other roles, then in chronological order.
  • Discography: "Release title (album/ep/single)". Release title with a hyperlink to its respective page, even if it doesn't exist yet. Details such as release years or formats (CD/LP/cassette) should not be noted here, as they are dependent on specific versions and are accounted for in their respective release pages.
  • Links: links to the sites you used as sources of information, as well as any other links relevant to the band in question.

If you do know how to do notes and citations the right way™, you're welcome to add the Notes section, use it the way it was meant to, and leave the Links section to generic social media redirects and the like. This last bit should be mandatory, but we ain't got the reach to have enough people with the knowhow and will to do things 100% right™. 'tis an amateur labor of love for the time being, take it or leave it.

In terms of page categories: {Demonym} bands (i.e. American/British/Colombian bands), Bands from {State/Province} ({Country}), Active/Inactive bands, Information needed (if the article is a stub).

  • Band logo file names should be "BandLogo-BandName.png/jpg", ideally be under 1000x1000, and have a transparent background.
  • Following writing basics for once; avoid biases on paragraphs you write yourself, strive for neutrality (no "X unfortunately died", "they released an amazing album", etc.).

Looking For > Wanted

This is an incomplete and outdated list of the releases we're looking for and that we have 1. nothing, or 2. incomplete rips of. If you come across a release that is not listed on our index, that you can't find anywhere, that fits the scope of the preservation project, and that you'd like to add to the list, you're welcome to do so. Additions are as simple as clicking "edit" at the top of the page, finding the place where your addition would fit alphabetically, right clicking the entry above or below and inserting a row above or below, then filling all the cells up accordingly.
